August Field Work in San Bruno

Approaching the community site for this round of TARTA data gathering, we immediately noticed the industrial nature of the surroundings. A concrete materials facility greeted us immediately with towering structures, trucks surrounding it, and the sounds of its operation. Close by, we noticed the sheen of what appeared to be a newly constructed building.

Talking with our community host, we learned about the new building that had been an ache to residents with debris and sound during the construction as well as an upcoming demolition project in the area that is anticipated to cause further disruption. Standing outside the hosts’ home, we noticed the habitual passage of airplanes overhead.

The residential area tucked amidst this area had the perfect set up to install TARTA out of the residents’ way along with our newly calibrated wind sensor. Luckily, the location had a fence we could attach the wind sensor to after verifying that the sensor was pointing due North using the iPhone compass. This first installation took a few minutes of rigging to make sure it was relatively secure and out of the way, using zip-ties and even a bungee cord from our tool bag to attach it to the fence.

We checked to see that both machines were up and running and talked through any possible troubleshooting with our community hosts.
